Patrick Reed has become only the second golfer to hit a sub-60 round on the Asian Tour, shooting a third-round 59 at the Hong Kong Open to leave him three shots clear going into the final round.
The American star and former Masters Champion matched his compatriot and LIV Golf colleague John Catlin, who hit a 59 earlier in the season at the International Series Macau, to give himself a cushion as he looks to end a near 4-year drought without a title.
Though the score will not officially stand, with preferred lies in place, the feat will be a big boost for Reed as he looks to go into the 2025 LIV Golf season with momentum, particularly if he can maintain his lead in the final round and secure his first title since January 2021.
The LIV Golf star’s recent form has picked-up after a solid but unspectacular season on the Saudi-backed league, where he finished the season in 20th place, maintaining his place for the 2025 season on the 4 Aces GC team.
If he can hold on to win his first title, the enigmatic American will go into the final two events on the Asian Tour with confidence, with both events, the International Series Qatar, followed by the end of season PIF Saudi International, bringing together a star-studded field, with the likes of Cameron Smith, Dustin Johnson, Tyrrell Hatton and Joaquin Niemann, joining Reed and eyeing a strong end to 2024.
